EAW Polikarpov I-16 type 5

This model represents one of the second batch of I-16 type 5 aircraft sent to Spain in December 1936, and was probably part of 3a Escuadrilla de Moscas. The 3rd Escuadrilla had a mixture of Soviet and Republican pilots, both Spanish and foreign volunteers, such as Frank Tinker and Albert Baumler - both Americans.

The I-16 was dubbed the Mosca (fly) by the Republicans and Rata (rat) by the Nationalists. The Moscas more or less maintained air superiority for the Republicans from 1936 through 1937 when the improved type 10 began replacing it in combat.

I developed this new model of the I-16 at Steve Day's urging, and in partnership with him. I developed the new 3DZ starting with Charles Gunst's original I-16 model. (I still can't fathom how Charles did it without anything but a hex editor) Steve Day is the author of this fantastic skin.

In addition to the Type 5 here, there will also be Type 10 and Type 24 versions. There will be Spanish Civil War as well as Russian VVS - so you can fly one of these versions in either Spain or in Russia WWII.

Use with Charles' ECAPanel in the Hurricane slot.

My thanks to Steve Day for the excellent art work, Charles for the original basis 3DZ and ECAP flight model, and Alessandro Borges for his 3dz engineering tools.

Cheers,

Captain Kurt
